Portugal Wall Art: 10 Analog Film Prints From Lisbon to the Algarve

Framed analog film print of Lisbon rooftops at golden hour above an oak sideboard in a Mediterranean living room

The best Portugal wall art does one thing well: it brings back the light. My pick of 10 analog film prints covers the whole country in four moods: warm terracotta rooftops in Lisbon, wild Atlantic rock near Sintra and Peniche, hidden turquoise coves in Arrábida, and summer from above in the Algarve. For a living room, start with a wide Lisbon or Praia da Ursa landscape at 50 x 70 cm. For a bedroom or hallway, pick a calmer coastal print at 30 x 40 cm. Below you will find all ten prints, region by region, a table to match each one to a room, and my styling tips.

I lived near Lisbon and shot every one of these photographs on analog film, from the Lisbon miradouros to the coves of the coast. They are printed to order as giclée prints on fine art paper, so the grain and the soft colour of the film come through on your wall.

What makes Portugal wall art feel authentic?

Search for Portugal wall art and you will mostly find illustrated posters of trams and azulejo tiles. They are lovely, but they show the Portugal of postcards. What I wanted to keep from my years there is quieter: the ochre and terracotta of the rooftops at golden hour, the deep teal of the Atlantic under the cliffs, and that soft, slightly faded summer light.

Analog film is very good at exactly that. Colour film renders warm tones gently and adds a fine grain, so a photo of a Lisbon rooftop or a Lagos beach feels more like a memory than a screenshot. Please note that my photos are shot on film but printed with a giclée printer on fine art matte paper, not printed on film.

Which Lisbon prints work best on a wall?

1. Lisboa Skyline

Lisboa Skyline is the wide view: layers of orange and ochre rooftops rolling toward the Tagus, with a white church dome catching the last light. It is a landscape print, which makes it my first choice above a sideboard or a sofa.

2. Lisboa Rooftops

Lisboa Rooftops was shot from a balcony in Alfama: red tiled roofs, a church tower in the sun, the river glinting in the distance and an old iron street lamp curling into the frame. It is the most intimate of the three and works beautifully in a dining room.

3. Lisboa Alfama Hats

Lisboa Alfama Hats is a small detail: a row of straw hats on a sunny ledge above Alfama, with the bell towers of São Vicente de Fora behind. A playful choice for a hallway, an entrance or a kitchen wall.

Which prints capture the wild Atlantic coast?

North and west of Lisbon, the coast turns dramatic. These three prints are for people who prefer rock, wind and deep water to beach umbrellas.

4. Praia da Ursa Panorama

Praia da Ursa Panorama shows the sea stacks of Praia da Ursa, near Sintra and Cabo da Roca, from the beach at golden hour. Tiny figures on the sand give the rocks their real scale. As a 50 x 70 cm landscape, it holds a large wall on its own.

5. Peniche Wildflowers

Peniche Wildflowers was taken through wild yellow flowers on the dunes above Peniche, with a paddleboarder waiting for the next wave. Soft focus, warm film cast: a gentle print for a bedroom.

6. Ilha da Berlenga Inlet

Ilha da Berlenga Inlet looks straight down a narrow channel of turquoise water between two cliffs in the Berlengas, the protected archipelago off Peniche (the Centre of Portugal tourism board has a good guide if you want to visit). A tall, vertical composition that suits narrow walls.

What does the Arrábida coast look like on film?

Just south of Lisbon, the Arrábida Natural Park is one of the least crowded stretches of coast in Portugal. On film, the colour of its water barely looks real.

7. Sesimbra Cove

Sesimbra Cove is shot from the clifftop scrub above Sesimbra, looking down into a small cove where deep blue water turns pale turquoise near the sand. Green in the foreground, sea below: it brings a lot of calm to a bedroom.

8. Praia da Ribeira do Cavalo

Praia da Ribeira do Cavalo holds a whole cove in one frame: three rock towers, a white boat at anchor and a crescent of sand, seen from the cliff above. It is one of my favourite statement pieces at 50 x 70 cm.

9. Lagos Aerial Swim

Lagos Aerial Swim looks straight down from a clifftop into a Lagos cove: two tiny swimmers, an enormous amount of turquoise. It is the most joyful print of the collection.

10. Lagos Morning Mist

Lagos Morning Mist shows the other side of the Algarve: surfers heading out on an early, misty morning, their shapes fading into the haze. Warm, muted, almost sepia. A beautiful, quiet print for a bedroom or a reading corner.

How do you style Portugal prints at home?

As an interior architect, I find these photographs easiest to live with in rooms that borrow the same materials as Portugal itself. A few rules I use:

  • Repeat one colour from the print. A terracotta cushion next to a Lisbon print, a teal vase near an Arrábida cove. One echo is enough.
  • Keep the frames natural. A thin oak frame suits the warm film tones. For 30 x 40 cm and 50 x 70 cm you can order the print framed in oak, ready to hang.
  • Mix city and sea. A Lisbon rooftop next to a coastal print tells the whole story of a trip. Two prints already take 15% off, three take 20% and four or more take 25%.
  • Leave space around a single print. A plaster or limewashed wall with one large photograph feels more Portuguese than a crowded wall.

If you want to group several prints, my travel gallery wall guide has seven layouts with measurements, and the wall art size guide explains how to choose between A4, 30 x 40 and 50 x 70 cm for your sofa, bed or sideboard. You can also see every photo in the Portugal collection.

Frequently asked questions

What colours go with Portugal wall art?

Warm neutrals work best: cream, sand, limewashed white and natural oak. Then add one accent taken from the photo, such as terracotta for Lisbon prints or teal and turquoise for the coastal ones.

Are the prints printed on film?

No. I shoot the photographs on analog film, then they are printed to order as giclée prints on fine art matte paper. That keeps the grain and colour of the film with the sharpness of a fine art print.

Are these limited edition prints?

No, they are open edition and made to order, so a print you love will not sell out. My signature is printed on the image.

Can I order a Portugal print framed?

Yes, in 30 x 40 cm (€295) and 50 x 70 cm (€365), with an oak frame. A4 prints are sold unframed.

Which Portugal print makes a good gift?

For someone who loves Lisbon, Lisboa Rooftops or Lisboa Alfama Hats. For a surfer or a beach lover, Lagos Morning Mist or Lagos Aerial Swim. Shipping is free worldwide.
